Abstract

1419495 Sedimentation Tank SUGAR RESEARCH LTD 12 Dec 1972 [28 Dec 1971] 60248/71 Heading B1D In a method and apparatus for clarifying liquid (e.g. sugar juice) by sedimentation, liquid is fed continuously to annular feed well 20 through multiple inlet points, the liquid is discharged from well 20 onto annular plate 24 which reduces the velocity of the liquid and diverts approximately equal proportions to either side of the well, the clarified juice is removed continuously through multiple take off points (circular launders) 45 and 46 and mud is removed from collector 13 through pipe 14. The take off flows are proportional to the surface area of the tank fom which they are drawn. An annular inlet channel 25 feeds feed well 20 over castellated weirs having deflector plates 75 Fig. 9 (not shown). Channel 25 has rotating scrapers 26 which discharge sediment from channel 25 through slots to the feed well 20 to prevent sedimentation. A central rotating shaft 50 carries the scrapers 26, annular deflector plate 24, scrapers 53 and stirrer 51. A coagulent (e.g. lime) may be added to inlet channel 25 by coagulent feed head (32) in feed channels (30) (Figs. 2 and 3 not shown). Annular feed well 20 may have radial baffles to reduce circulation of juice. A deaeration unit may precede the sedimentation tank.
