Abstract
1419140 Making drop-centre wheels GKN SANKEY Ltd 12 July 1974 [12 April 1973] 17747/73 Heading B3A [Also in Division B7] A method of making a drop centre wheel comprising a disc 10 and rim 11 which are permanently secured together comprises rotating the wheel about its rotary axis and working bead seats 23, 24 on the rim to render them coaxial with the axis. The initial rim may have partially finished bead seats, Fig. 2 (not shown), or they may be formed while rotating the wheel about the rotary axis. The disc and rim have abutment portions 16, 20 at their point of engagement and are secured together by welding at points 21, 22. Any finishing operations to be performed on the disc, e.g. countersinking holes 13 and machining the centre hole 12, are performed prior to the finishing and truing of the bead seats. The bead seats are formed in the rim by flow-forming or a combination of rolling and flow-forming. The welds 21, 22 are compressed when forming the rim to its final shape.
