Abstract

1419133 Cable terminations FUJIKURA CABLE WORKS Ltd 2 Feb 1973 [2 Feb 1972] 5421/73 Heading H2E A termination providing an optimum temperature gradient comprises a connecting lead wire 8 attached to the end of the terminated super conductor 2, a casing 9 surrounding the end of the super conductor 2 and filled with circulated liquid helium 5, a hollow bush 32 surrounding an intermediate portion of the lead wire 8 adjacent the casing 7 and filled with circulated liquid helium 39, a tank 41 having a portion of the casing 9 and one end 36 of the bush 32 encased therein and filled with circulated liquid helium 70, a bush 13 surrounding an intermediate portion of the lead wire 8 adjacent the other end 35 of the bush 32 and filled with circulated gaseous nitrogen 22, a tank 44 having one end 17 of the bush 13 and the other end 35 of the bush 32 encased therein and filled with circulated liquid nitrogen 46, the other end 16 of the bush 13 being surrounded by an insulator 28 containing insulating oil 29. The terminal portion of the super conductor 2 is reinforced with insulation 7 and the liquid helium 5 is in communication with the interior of a pipe 4 which houses the super conductor 2, being circulated via pipes 10, 11. Ends of the casing 9 and bush 32 are closed by metal fittings 31, 34 and reinforced with insulation 14. Ends 35, 17 of the bushes 32, 13 are also closed by metal fittings 33, 19 and reinforced with insulation 14. The tanks 41, 44 have vacuum walls 45, 49 and the helium 70 and nitrogen 46 are circulated via pipes 43, 42 and 47, 48 respectively. Within the bushes 32, 13 the connecting conductor is reinforced with insulation 40, 15 and the helium and nitrogen are circulated via pipes 37, 38 and 20, 21 respectively. The'end 16 of the bush 13 is covered by an insulator 28 filled with oil 29. In another aspect (Fig. 1, not shown) the conductor 2 and tank 9 are circulated with liquid nitrogen, and the bush 40 and tank 41 are omitted from the termination; the box 9 extending into the tank (23) which encloses the end 17 of the bush 13.
