Abstract

1419048 Cathode-ray tube displays BURROUGHS CORP 18 March 1974 [16 April 1973] 11880/74 Heading H4T In a data display system data specifying characters of a first group are supplied to a first character generator the output of which controls a display device (a cathode-ray tube or a Self- Scan panel) whilst data specifying a second group of characters are supplied to a second character generator the output of which also controls the display device. The first character generator is concerned with displaying all of the characters employed in the country in which the system is operated (some of which characters may be common to the machine language of foreign countries) whilst the second character generator is concerned with displaying respective different sets of unique characters employed in each of a number of foreign countries such as shown in Fig. 1, where the U.S.A. is deemed to be the user country. As shown in Fig. 2, all of the data, derived from a computer 20 is supplied via a memory 30 to a storage buffer 40 the output of which is supplied directly to the first character generator 50 and to the second character generator 70 via an encoder 100 and a full adder 80. Generator 50 responds to all of the user country character data including data common to some foreign countries and displays the corresponding characters on device 60. When, however, the codes of the data of the second group of characters, e.g. those listed in Fig. 1, occur, encoder 100 responds and via character generator control 102, arrests the operation of generator 50 and enables the operation of generator 70. Encoder 100 also supplies the character data of the second group as one input to the full adder 80 which receives, as a second input, an identifying code, unique to a particular foreign country, generated by a country selector 90 and changeable by means of "jumper", connections. The output of adder 80 then comprises a signal which accesses the section (Fig. 3, not shown) in character generator 70 in which the selected character data is located and such data then provides the required display on the device 60. A plurality of character generators similar to generator 70 concerned with the display of characters unique to foreign countries additional to those indicated in Fig. 1 may be employed (Fig. 6, not shown). Details of the logic circuits in elements 40, 90, 100 and 102 are described with reference to Figs. 4 and 5 (neither shown) and a schematic arrangement of a Self-Scan panel of the dot-matrix display type is described with reference to Fig. 7 (not shown).
