Abstract

1418441 Liquid crystal compositions MERCK PATENT GmbH 12 March 1974 [28 April 1973] 11003/74 Heading C4X A nematic mixture with positive dielectric anisotropy, useful for example in a matrix electro-optic "twist" display cell, comprises at least one compound (1) of the formula where A is azoxy or carbonyloxy and R 1 and R 2 (the same or different) are n-alkyl or n-alkoxy groups with 1-8 carbon atoms; and at least one compound (2) of the formula X-R-Y where X is a C 4 to C 9 n-alkyl group or a dialkylamine group with 2-4 carbon atoms, Y is -CN, -NO 2 -or -CF 3 , and R is p-phenylene, p,p<SP>1</SP> - biphenyl or p,p<SP>1</SP> - disubstituted phenyl benzoate (X and T on either aromatic ring). A third component (3) of the formula where R 1 and R 2 are C 1 -C 8 n-alkyl or n-alkoxy groups and may be the same or different, may be added to raise the nematic-isotropic transition temperature. The binary mixture consists preferably of 65-99 (70-95)% by weight of compound(s) (1). The ternary mixture preferably comprises 20-95 (45-80)% by weight of compound(s) (1), 3-65 (10-45)% by weight of compound(s) (2), and 2-27 (10-25)% by weight of compound(s) (3).
