Abstract

1418215 Treating waste material ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES Inc 13 Nov 1973 52702/73 Addition to 1337301 Heading C3N A method of treating liquid or semi-liquid waste material to render it non-polluting and fit for ultimate disposal, comprises mixing an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate with the waste material and Portland cement to cause the silicate and Portland cement to react with each other, the proportion of the silicate and the Portland cement being such that the reaction converts the mixture into a solid with the waste material entrapped in the solidified silicate. In a modification the Portland cement may be contained in the waste material itself. The amount of silicate solution plus the amount of Portland cement may be 10% or less of the total volume of the mixture or of the volume of the waste material. The specific examples refer to the treatment of (1) sludge from the waste water treatment plant of a steel mill and (2) waste and sludge from the waste treatment plant of an automotive assembly operation. The materials contained in such wastes are specified.
