Abstract

1417017 Protective clothing FELDMUHLE ANLAGEN-UND PRODUKTIONS GmbH 14 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 57720/72 Heading A3V An armoured vest 7 comprises pockets 8 and 9 which are disposed in a staggered relationship one to the other each pocket having disposed therein an insert 10 consisting of a composite material with at least one metal layer and at least one layer of a sintered hard non-metallic inorganic material. The metal is preferably steel or iron and the inorganic material may be high melting oxides, carbides, nitrides, barides or silicides. Thus the inserts 10 may be in the form of metal plates with a spray coating of the inorganic material one one or both sides. Crosspieces in the metal base material may subdivide the inorganic layer to prevent chipping of large areas. Alternatively the inserts may be metal plates having applied thereto bodies of the inorganic material and held in place by frames round the edges of the metal plates or by bending the edges of the plates to secure the bodies of inorganic material. An elastomeric material layer may be disposed between the metal plates and bodies of the inorganic material. The pockets 8 and 9 in the vest 7 are disposed so that the inserts 10 overlap one another to provide a compact protective surface.
