Abstract

1416389 Bearings TORRINGTON CO 10 April 1973 [1 May 1972] 17154/73 Heading F2A [Also in Division B3] A method of making a roller bearing cage (Fig. 9) comprises the following steps: (a) punching rectangular openings in flat stock 28 (Fig. 3) by means of a punch 26 and die 20, the width A of the opening in the die being greater than the width B of the punch, whereby the longitudinal side walls 44 of each opening diverge for at least a part of their depth, there being grooves 30 in the sides of the punch which cause portions 38 to project into the openings; (b) feeding the flat strip to a pressing apparatus (Fig. 4), which presses the portions 38 into rollerretaining projections; (c) cutting the strip into lengths; (d) forming each length into an annular member, and welding the ends together. As an additional step, the strip may be fed to swages 76 (Fig. 7), which cause material to be extruded outwardly to form lugs 84 on the lower sides of the cross-bars 78. In an alternative apparatus to that shown in Fig. 3, the openings in the die have protuberances in the longitudinal sides which are aligned with the grooves 30 in the punch. This apparatus enables larger projections to be formed in the strip.
