Abstract

1415959 Power steering AUTOIPARI KUTATO INTEZET 12 June 1973 27955/73 Heading B7H Steering is power-assisted by a double-acting piston 2 having a rack 3 formed on its skirt and slidable within a cylinder 1 divided by the piston into upper and lower chambers 7, 8. A rotatable slide valve 15 is fitted within the piston 2 and threaded to a steering spindle 16, such that rotation of the spindle effects sliding movement of the valve to supply fluid under pressure through a bore (21), Fig. 2 (not shown), or bore (22) to the chamber 7 or 8, Fig. 1, respectively, thus causing movement of the piston upwardly or downwardly. A channel 19 connected to bores 24a and 26 is connected selectively to the bores (21) or (22) depending on the direction of rotation of the spindle 16. A tube 24 journalled in piston cover 13a is sealed by packing 25 in the bore of spindle 16. In operation, the valve 15 is open until spindle is turned, so that both pressure chambers 7, 8 are connected with the outlet channel 20 for return to the pump reservoir. Upon rotation of spindle 16, the valve is displaced to stop flow between channels 19 and 20 so that pressure is supplied to one or other chamber 7 or 8 to displace the piston 2. Due to an annular space 13 communicating the chamber 8, the pressure of the chamber 8 affects the annular part of the piston encircling the tube 24. The small size of the packing 25 around the tube 24 reduces frictional losses.
