Abstract

1415856 Recovery of cryolite DUTTON WASTE RECOVERY Ltd 27 April 1973 [27 April 1972] 19737/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division F4] A cryolite carbon mixture from the linings of electrolytic aluminium pots is crushed at 3 and 5 and fed to a fluidized bed 10, supplied with fluidizing air and fuel gas. The temperature of the bed is maintained below the melting temperature of the cryolite by a cooling pipe 13 immersed in the bed, and the cryolite is removed by a conveyer 14. Cryolite dust carried off in the flue gases is removed in a filter plant 18 and fed to the conveyer 14. In another embodiment, cryolite dust is removed from the flue gases in a cyclone and returned to the fluidized bed, the waste gases pass through a heat exchanger and are partly recycled. The proportion of gas recycled gives a coarse control of the bed temperature, which is closely controlled by the immersed cooling coil. Cryolite taken from the bed may be returned to reduce the carbon content still further, or more carbon may be removed in a gas fired furnace.
