Abstract

1415525 Dock gates MAUNSELL & PARTNERS PTY Ltd 11 Sept 1973 [11 Sept 1972] 42016/72 Heading E1H A dock gate 1 of the flap type pivots about horizontal hinges connected to its lower edge and has bearing surfaces 6, 7 which engage surfaces 9 and 21 of a claw 10 formed in the sill 20 of the dock. The surface 7 has a bearing strip (8) (not shown) which, together with rubber quoin seals (16) (not shown) abutting the sides of the dock, seal the gate 1 when it is closed. The gate is raised or lowered in a preferred embodiment by emptying or flooding respectively one or more ballast tanks 13 located within the gate 1 below the low water level and a further ballast tank 14 is located along the lower edge of the gate, the tank 14 providing buoyancy when stepping or unstepping the gate 1, but being normally flooded. The upper edge of the gate I has a roadway or walkway 15 and a trash flap 22 to protect the seal between the surfaces 9 and 7. The surface 6 may also be provided with a seal and an auxiliary seal (23) (not shown) provided on the outer (with respect to the dock) surface of the gate 1 so that when the gate is closed, the claw 10 may be drained, access to the claw 10 being provided by a shaft in the dockside. When the gate I is opened it is stowed in a well 25 extending outwardly from the dock entrance and having a shock absorber 27. In alternative constructions, the hinges, about which the gale pivots, are located in the claw 10 and a buoyancy tank is located either within but on the outer side of the gate or externally of and attached to the outer surface of the gate so as to provide a turning moment about the hinges. The gate may be open and closed by mechanical means either instead of or in combination with the buoyancy tanks.
