1415396 Smoothing yarns; warp sizing BURLINGTON INDUSTRIES INC 21 Feb 1973 8525/73 Headings D1F and D1M In a process of sizing yarns and laying down randomly projecting peripheral fibres thereof, a sheet or web 18 of yarn e.g. from warp section beams, passes into a box 10 of sizing solution 12, under a free or driven roller 14, thence through driven squeeze rolls 16. The sheet then passes over a single grooved roller or, as shown, it is subdivided into sheets 19 each of which passes generally tangentially over a grooved roller 20 rotatably driven (as by belt or gears) from a motor 23 in a direction opposite or similar to the direction of yarn travel but in any case with a speed differential therebetween. The width of each groove is such that the single yarn passing therethrough is subjected to a compressive force during at least a portion of its passage, and the depth of the groove is greater than a major crosssectional dimension of the yarn: thus a resistive drag is imparted to the projecting fibres which are thereby wrapped helically about the yarn surface. The surfaces of the grooves are cleaned to prevent accummulation of size and fibre therein by streams of dry steam applied from slotted tubes 22 supplied from a steam generator 24 through conduits 26. Treated yarns are dried by spreading and passing over rotary drying cylinders 28. Each roller 20, Fig. 2, may be machined from a cylinder of wear-resistant material e.g. acetal resin plastics or metal, to form grooves 30 or discs 32 (or washers of alternating different diameters) may be assembled on, and keyed at 40 to, the shaft 38 to form the grooved construction.
