Abstract

1415028 Practising apparatus A C ANGELOS 26 June 1973 [13 March 1973] 30261/73 Heading A6D Apparatus for detecting the amount of spin imparted to a ball (e.g. the amount of 'slice' or 'hook' of a golf ball) when hit from a point of origin 6, comprises an impact surface 9 positioned in the path of travel of the ball, detector means 10 positioned between the point 6 and the surface 9 for detecting a first point at which the ball passes the detector means as it is travelling towards surface 9 and for detecting the location of a second point at which the ball rebounding from surface 9 again passes the detector means, and means for comparing said first and second points to determine the amount of spin imparted to the ball. In the embodiment shown the detecting means 10 comprises a series of photo-detectors illuminated by light sources 12 each detector being associated with a switch and a resistance in an electric circuit (Fig. 3, not shown) arranged so that the voltage across the circuit corresponds to the detector or detectors operated by the ball. The circuit also includes a capacitor for storing the voltage corresponding to the detector actuated as the ball travels to the impact surface and another capacitor for storing the voltage corresponding to the detector actuated by the rebounding ball. These voltages are compared so as to produce and output indicative of the amount of spin imparted to the ball. If there is no spin on the ball i.e. the angle of reflection of the ball from the impact surface is the same as the angle of incidence then the voltages are the same and no output signal is given. If there is spin imparted to the ball then the angle of reflection is different from the angle of incidence thus producing different voltages across the circuit the difference in the voltages being indicative of the degree of spin and also its direction i.e. whether it has been hit with a 'slice' or 'hook' effect.
