Abstract

1414967 Filling machines; filling containers with powders H J HEINZ CO Ltd 18 Oct 1972 [26 Oct 1971] 49706/71 Headings B8T and B8C Open ended containers 10 are advanced on an indexing conveyer 11 either by regularly spaced pegs 14 or by a worm drive. Positioned in line above the can path is a filling device 20, comprising two independent rotor housings 21 with integral apertured bases formed with a line of downwardly directed discharge ports 22 and a rotor 25 which fits closely into the lower part of the housing bore 23. The upper part of the bore is arched to produce a pocket 26 which communicates with inlet and output ports 27, 28 and is continuously fed from a pumped product supply 30, 31, 32. Each rotor has a peripheral helical groove 33 with three turns and of a width that overlies two of the discharge ports 22, and its pitch is the same as the can indexing on the conveyer. There is a common drive for the rotors 25 and the conveyer 11. The discharge ports 22 contain flexible tubes 58 which are normally pinched closed in groups of seven by obturating members (60), Fig. 4 (not shown), operated by pistons (64) in pneumatic cylinders (65) and actuated by can sensing arms 74, which normally lie in the can travel path. With no cans on the conveyer the product is only circulated through the housings. However, when a can 10 is on the conveyer 11, it engages sensing arm 74 which operates piston (64) and reverses obturating member 60 to open the first group of discharge tubes 58. The angular disposition of helical groove 33 relative to the indexing pegs 14 is such that groove 33 scans the first of the open apertures 22 and feeds the product to the first two delivery tubes. Continuing rotation of rotor 25 causes groove 33 to scan the remaining open outlets 22 is sequence at the same speed as the moving can, which, on approaching the next sensing arm 74 opens the second set of discharge tubes, so that in-line feeding can continue until the container is filled. The length of sensing arm 74 is so adjusted that, if no can is following, oburating member 60 will be closed before helical groove 33 feeds the product to an empty space.
