Abstract
1414413 Sintered band saw blades CONTOUR SAWS Inc 18 May 1973 23827/73 Heading C7D [Also in Division B3] Bi-metal strip for the production of hand saw blades is made by hot isostatic compaction of an assembly comprising metal or alloy powder 15 enclosed between the parallel faces of two metal bodies 12 which may be solid, powder or presintered compacts. The assembly is encased in an air-tight container, evacuated, sealed, isostatically hot pressed and the hot pressed composite is rolled into strip and then slit through the centre of the powder layer 15 to form two lengths of bi-metal strip. The strip after stress relieving, straightening and sizing is milled to form the cutting teeth in the sintered powder layer 15. The powder 15 which forms the layer for the teeth is preferably high speed steel and the backing bodies 12 are medium carbon or low alloy steel. Powder oxides, carbides and nitrides e.g. a trace to 30% atomic of TLO 2 , Y 2 O 3 , Yb 2 O 3 , Ce 2 O 3 , La 2 O 3 , Pr203, NbC, TaC, TiC, HfC, UC, LaC, CeC, BN, ZrN, Al 2 O 3 , ZrB 2 , may be added to the powder 15. Pressing is effected at 1800-2250‹F and 15-20,000 p.s.c. When the bodies 12 are present as powder, metal dividers 37 are used to separate the powder layers in the container 35. The dividers should preferably have the same composition as one of the metal powders. The assembly may be built up of series of bodies 12 separated by spaces 30 of equal width which are filled with the powder of the cutting teeth layer. After hot pressing and rolling a multi sandwich strip is formed which is slit into several bi-metal lengths.
