Abstract

1414290 Differential gear AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 3 May 1974 [8 May 1973] 19593/74 Heading F2D Clutches loaded by springs 25 couple the side wheels 9 of a differential unit to the housing 1, 2 through sleeves 16 which are rotatable with but axially slidable in the housing part 1, and input torque in excess of that transmissible by the clutches results in relative movement in the direction F 1 or F 2 , Fig. 3, between the pinion shaft 14 and the sleeves whereby co-operating ramps 15, 17 cause outward movement of the sleeves to reduce the spring loading on the clutches. In the embodiment shown the clutches comprise discs 21a, 21b, and the arrangement may be such that clutch engagement forces initially increase due to tooth reaction whilst clearances between the ends of splined side wheel extensions 11 and abutment rings 26 are taken up. Thereafter the spring loadings are reduced as described. In a modification the clutch discs are replaced by interengaging cones.
