1413809 Combined buffing and draw gear for rail vehicles ACF INDUSTRIES Inc 15 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 52810/72 Heading B7T [Also in Division F2] A railway cushioning device comprises first and second rubber buffers 36, 44 in series with an hydraulic damper 56, a car coupler 20 having a shank connected to a yoke 24 enveloping the buffers and damper, the damper having a movable member with a projection 64 extending through the second buffer 44 into engagement with the first 36, a compressive force on the coupler causing compression of the buffers and the force being applied to the damper through the first buffer, only the damper and the first buffer being actuated on a return movement. The coupler 20, Fig. 3, has an arcuate surfaced insert 26 and tapered portions 28 to permit horizontal and vertical movements relative to a pin 22 connecting it to the yoke 24. In operation, the coupler compresses the buffer 36 until a plate 34 abuts stops 38 on a housing 40 which then compresses the buffer 44 and operates the damper until stopped by abutment 46. The buffers 36, 44 are pre-loaded by bolts 48, 50 attached to the plates 42, 34. The hydraulic damper 56 has an orifice 72 and a smaller orifice 68 acting on the return movement, both orifices having a spring-pressed non-return ball-valve. On a return movement the yoke 24, which is moved clear of the damper in a compressive movement, engages the plunger 66 of the piston 62 anc moves the plunger 64 to compress the buffer 36.
