Abstract

1413253 Hand grenade fuzes C A LECANDA 12 Jan 1973 1810/73 Heading F3A A hand grenade fuze which can be set for impact and/or delayed detonation comprises a striker 8 held at a safe distance from a percussion cap 19 by a safety pin 15; a spring-driven slide 30 carrying a detonator 37, a percussion cap 40 and a long delay 35; a viscously damped plunger 27 holding the slide at a safe distance from a striker 36; a further safety pin (not shown) holding the plunger 27 in its safety position; and a handle 1 holding both safety pins in their operative positions. A withdrawable safety means (not shown) holds the handle in position. When the grenade is launched, a mass 13 sets back and pushes the striker 8 tightly against the pin 15. However, when the acceleration phase is over, the mass is returned to its original position by a spring 10 and the pin 15 is withdrawn by centrifugal force to free the striker for action on impact. Meanwhile, the safety pin securing the plunger 27 is withdrawn by spring means and so facilitates delayed withdrawal of the plunger 27 from the slide 30. The percussion cap 40 is thereby ignited by the striker 36; and the detonator 37 is ignited by the delay 35 if the striker 8 has not previously been actuated. To set the fuze for delay action only, a plug 5 is turned so that the striker 8 is urged tightly against the pin 15 and prevents its subsequent withdrawal.
