Abstract
1412773 Packages formed from moulded thermoplastics compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 Jan 1973 [24 Feb 1972 24 April 1972 8 May 1972] 8567/72 18822/72 and 21352/72 Addition to 1367637 Heading B8C A sealed package comprising contents partially, or totally, enclosed by a moulded container formed from a thermoplastic composition which comprises a homogeneous copolymer of acrylonitrile and at least one aromatic olefine, the molar concentration of units of acrylonitrile to units of aromatic olefine being within the range 86-93%, and optionally a compatible graft copolymer having a diene rubber substrate, the concentration of graft polymer, if any, being such that its rubber content is not more than 50% by weight of thermoplastic composition is characterized in that the package comprises a moulded container which is obtained by a coldparison process whereby the package consists of a moulded container which is obtained by blowmoulding a parison which has been partially cooled, or reheated, within the range of 100‹ to 170‹ C. A cold-parison process comprises producing a tubular parison by a normal extrusion process at a temperature, for example, in excess of 170‹ C., and then either cooling the parison for storage and subsequently re-heating it within the range of 100-170‹ C. or, partially cooling the parison, after extrusion, to within the latter range, and then blow-moulding the parison at this temperature to produce the moulded container. The preferred temperature range is 125-160‹ C. and, more precisely, 140-150‹ C. The cold-parison process is stated to improve burst strength, drop height, colour, and clarity and allows containers to be of lower weight and rubber content. The homogeneous copolymer may contain additives such as heat-stabilizers. A graft copolymer is prepared by a method similar to that described in Example 4 of Specification 1,185,306 and is latex blended with an acrylonitrile-styrene resin made by the method described in Specification 1,185,305, but containing 87À5% molar acrylonitrile to give a blend containing 12% by weight of rubber. A tubular parison was moulded from a sample of the blend using a melt temperature of 180-190‹ C. and a die temperature of 195‹ C. the parison then being cooled to 145‹ C. and blown in a mould to form a bottle.
