Abstract

1412116 Feeding roller shearing gaps ZIMMER PLASTIC GmbH 1 Dec 1972 [15 Dec 1971] 55574/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division D1] In the coating of a substrate and/or moulding of polymeric material sheet or film, in a shearing gap defined by at least one roll and a fixed wedge or shoe, or by opposed rolls 22, 23, Fig. 1, contrarotating at different speeds and heated to different temperatures, the material is delivered to the roller nip 20 in the form of strands 12 extending parallel to and along substantially the full length of the nip, and which are sequentially cut from an extrusion 4 continuously delivered from a screw extruder 1 on to a conveyer belt 6 extending parallel to the nip 20. The strands 12 are cut by a device 7 actuated from a device 8, e.g. a light barrier, or digital measuring system, or comprising a limit switch operated upon displacement of a control arm thereof by the strand leading end. The moulding material may comprise various specified thermoplastic and thermosetting materials, including rigid and plasticised P.V.C. and polyurethane, foamable polymers and waxes, and which may be applied to various substrates which are removed with the coating of material from the higher speed roll, around a pressure roller. In the examples, plasticized P.V.C. material is coated on to a cotton material and a polyurethane sheet is moulded. Several strands may be simultaneously delivered into the nip and the strand or strands may comprise different materials or colours, e.g. blue and green. A gap 13 is produced between sequential strands 12, by the belt 6 running at a speed which is faster than that of extrusion, and is also variable from a drive 14. The cut strand 12 is delivered along an inclined grid 19 into the nip 20, upon ejection from the belt 6 by a metal plate 17, pivoted with a bar 9 by a pneumatic drive 18 actuated by a digital measuring system, or from a limit switch 15 upon deflection of an arm 16 thereof by the leading cut end of the strand 12. The switches 8 and 15 are slidably adjustable along the bar 9. In the Fig. 2 embodiment (not shown), the extrusion (4) is delivered from the extruder to the belt (6), via an upwardly inclined conveyer belt (24) and through a variable speed roller guide nip (26) at the downstream end thereof, at which it is cut by the device 7. The upwardly inclined belt (24) may define a conveying surface which is planar, or trough shaped as determined by guide rollers.
