Abstract

1411954 Encapsulation process XEROX CORP 20 Dec 1972 [30 Dec 1971] 58825/72 Heading B8C A core material is encapsulated by dissolving it, together with shell material, in a solvent mixture one component of which is substantially a non-solvent for the or at least one component of the core to form a single phase solution which is formed into droplets as a spray, suspending the droplets in a gas and removing solvent from the droplets whereby sequential separation of the core and shell material takes place and substantially dry capsules are obtained. The invention is described with particular reference to the production of toner particles for the development of electrostatic latent images on photoconductive surfaces comprising, e.g. the polymeric reaction product of isopropylidene diphenoxy propanol with adipic acid, the reaction product of a dimer acid with a linear diamine or "C 36 di-urea" encapsulated in a polymer such as a synthetic homopolymer, copolymer or terpolymer (many being mentioned) or a natural material such as gelatin, zein or grim arable. Numerous other core materials are mentioned, in particular water, oils and various polymeric materials. The core may also comprise an insoluble material, e.g. a pigment such as carbon black or a dye. Many solvents are mentioned, specific mixtures being chloroform/ isopropanol and chloroform/heptane. The spray of droplets may be produced by any of the conventional methods, e.g. using a pressure nozzle or centrifugal disc, it being contacted with air maintained at a suitable temperature.
