Abstract

1411298 Boring earth &c EXXON PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO 3 April 1973 15820/73 Heading E1 F [Also in Division F2] In a rotary swivel for use in drilling wells a packing assembly between two relatively rotatable drilling-fluid conducting members 19, 28 comprises a sleeve 29 secured to one member 19 and having an end wall 34 with an opening 35 therein, the second member 28 extending through the opening and having an end portion thereof disposed within the sleeve to define an annular space 37; and located within the space 37 a plastics ring 38 having an axially-extending recess, a ring 39 of soft bearing metal received in the recess, and one or more sealing rings 41. The ring 38 is preferably of PTFE and the ring 39 is of a metal having a Brinnel hardness of less than 100, e.g. bronze alloy or copper alloy. In the preferred swivel, two such assemblies are employed, the first 29 between goose-neck 19 and wash-pipe 28, and the second 30 between wash-pipe 28 and drill string 12, this enables the wash-pipe 28 in practice to remain stationary relative to either the goose-neck or drill string.
