Abstract

1411091 Full-face disc brakes LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Jan 1973 [12 Jan 1972] 1404/72 Heading F2E [Also in Division F1] The output shaft 41 of a gas turbine carries a pair of axially slidable brake discs 44, 45 which can be urged into engagement with fixed friction discs 46, 47 by axial movement apart of friction discs 48, 49. This movement is effected by a piston (53, Fig. 3, not shown) acting via a linkage (52) to relatively rotate discs 48, 49 which because of the camming action of balls 51 in tapered recesses (50) causes the discs to move apart. Piston (53) is biased to the brake-engaged position by a spring (57) but is moved to release the brake when a solenoid (56) is energized to communicate the turbine inlet pressure to the piston via a valve (55). The brake is thus applied if solenoid (56) is de-energized or if inlet pressure falls.
