Abstract

1411008 Upholstered seats DOW CHEMICAL CO 23 Jan 1973 [25 Sept 1972] 3474/73 Heading A4M [Also in Division C3] A chair or like article of seating furniture includes major structural members formed from a composite polyurethane foam which consists of polyurethane foam filled with expanded thermoplastics beads, the composite foam having a 25% Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) value of at least 50 lbs as determined under the test conditions specified in ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) D-1564. The composite foam forms the structural components of the back 11 and arm supports 21 of the seat. The back 11 and arm supports 21 are provided with softer foam cushioning layers 12-14 and 23, 24. A framing member 22 may be attached to a base 10 and located in the arm supports 21. The base 10 supports foam cushioning layers 15, 16, 18 which may be of differing softness. The layers 15, 16, 18 may be enclosed in fabric covers inter-connected at their edges to define hinges so that the layers may be unfolded to form a bed. The front edge of the seat is reinforced by wedge shaped pieces 17 of the composite foam.
