Abstract
1410226 Pretensioned reinforcement elements; railway sleepers R P SONNEVILLE 5 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971 4 May 1972] 55985/72 Headings E1G and E1W A high tensile steel tube 1 for prestressing concrete elements such as railway sleepers has radially projecting flanges or plates 2, 3 welded onto each end and is pretensioned by compressing a steel bar or tube 4 between the end plate 2 and a plate 5. The end plates 2, 3 may be friction welded to the tube 1. The compressing plate 5 may be replaced by a central bolt engaging a taped bore in the end plate 3 or by providing a screw thread and bolt head on the bar 4 itself. The tube 1 may have spiral ridges on its outer surface or be of oval cross section varying along its length. In a concrete sleeper Fig 5 (not shown) the tube is cast in a mould (M) and after the concrete has reached adequate strength the compressing plate or bolt is released and the bar or tube 4 removed. Alternatively a pair of pot sleeper blocks 51 having optional helical reinforcement 55 are connected by the pretensioned tubular tie bar, to provide prestressed sleeper blocks connected by an unstressed tie bar.
