Abstract

1410152 Acoustic measurement of displacement PLESSEY CO Ltd 22 Jan 1974 [28 March 1973] 14819/73 Heading H4D A device for detecting and measuring length changes includes a strip member 1 of piezoelectric material, an interdigital transducer 2 secured to its surface 1a for generating surface acoustic waves, and a second interdigital transducer in slideable contact with the surface for detecting the waves, relative lengthwise movement between the strip and second transducer resulting in a phase change of the detected waves The second transducer is supported by a piezoelectric plate 4 in a metal housing 5, 7. The member 1 is spring-urged against the second transducer and against screws 8 for adjusting the transducer alignment. Transducer 2 is energized by an oscillator with a selectable frequency stabilized, e.g. by means of a second pair of surface wave transducers on member 1. Member 1 may be of quartz, or comprise a piezo-electric material on a steel substrate. The device is calibrated by use of a micrometer or slip gauge and is useful for creep or strain measurements, machine tool control, and indirect measurement of temperature.
