Abstract

1409779 Dimerisation catalyst SOC ITALIANA RESINE SIR SPA 11 Sept 1973 [20 Sept 1972] 42743/73 Heading B1E [Also in Division C5] Olefin dimerisation catalysts are formed by (i) depositing 0.1-50% wt. of one or more Gp VIII metals on a natural or synthetic zeolite by ion exchange; (ii) contacting with an organic or inorganic base in the liquid or gas form at -35 to 250‹C for at least 30 mins, and (iii) eliminating the excess of base and heat-treating at 50-450‹C for at least 30 mins. Suitably, the zeolite has a surface area of 200-1200 m<SP>2</SP>/g and a pore diameter of 6 to 15A‹ and the group VIII metal is nickel or cobalt. Specified bases are: ammonia, monoethylamine, diethylamine, butylamine, ethylenediamine; pyridine, piperidine, picoline, quinoline and isoquinoline. The zeolite may be suspended in a liquid base, such a base may be allowed to percolate through a bed of the zeolite or a gaseous stream of the base may be passed through a bed of the zeolite. Excess base may be removed by heating. The Examples relate to nickel-on-zeolite 13X catalysts.
