Abstract
1409150 Artificial knee joints SULZER BROS LTD 31 Aug 1973 [1 Sept 1972] 41044/ 73 Heading A5R A prosthetic implant for a knee joint comprises tibial and femoral components with elongate anchorage portions 10, 1, one component having bearing surfaces 9 and a web 14 projecting between them arid the other component having bearing surfaces 6, for cooperation with the surfaces 9, extending from the arms 5 of a fork which embrases the web when the joint is assembed, the web being provided with a sot 15 which has a part extending obliquely to the axis of the corresponding anchorage portion and which receives a pin 8 which is attached to the other component. The slot may have a portion near the bearing surfaces which extends substantially parallel to the axis of the anchorage portion and the parts may be shaped so as to relieve the pin of bearing loads. Plastics materials may be used for spacers 18 between the web and fork arms and for bearing surfaces inserts 19. The anchorage portions taper in cruciform cross section and a triangular web 12 at the top of the lower shank prevents rotation of the joint relative to the bone. The surfaces 6 are cylindrical whilst the profile of the surfaces 9 is formed by circular arcs. An opening in the web allows the pin to be engaged in the slot during joint assembly, a closing piece 16 being subsequently fitted. Metal parts of the joint may be in alloys of cobalt, chromium, nickel and molybdenum. The plastics materials may be polyester.
