Abstract

1408347 Fibre reinforced stock; jointing by rolling FELTEN & GUILLEAUME KABELWERKE AG 6 April 1973 [2 June 1972] 16666/73 Headings B3A and B3M A method of producing stock material reinforced by fibre structure inlays comprises providing the fibres with a coating of matrix material or of a material which adheres to the matrix material, embedding layers of aligned coated fibres between layers of matrix material in indentations in which they are retained by adhesion imparting agents or by magnetic attraction, deoxydizing the fibre and matrix material surfaces, connecting the layers of matrix material and fibres to each other by rolling, drawing or pressing, and heat treating the stock so formed in a protective atmosphere. The stock material may be in the form of a sheet or tubing and in a preferred embodiment aluminium sheet is provided with grooves of various configurations by section rolling or a preliminary working process. Metallic fibres or fibres of oxides, carbides are placed in the grooves and the assembly so formed is subjected to a cladding operation with a further sheet of aluminium, an alloy thereof, or of another alloy. The fibres may comprise steel wire, carbon fibres, silica fibres, boron fibres, or silicon carbide fibres. The fibre surfaces may be pretreated by coppering, aluminizing, nickeling or silvering.
