1408340 Locks VACHETTE 18 Oct 1973 [24 Oct 1972] 48673/73 Heading E2A A cylinder lock comprises a barrel 1 having a cavity for a rotatable plug 2 with a keyway 3 and at least one locking mechanism the or each locking mechanism comprising a first locking element, a pin 16, which is movable within the plug and barrel along a path parallel to and offset from the central plane of the key way, a second locking element, a ball 15 projecting into the keyway and movable to and from the keyway and engaging one end of the pin 16, a constraining element, a piston 17 movable within the plug and barrel, the pin 16 and piston 17 being movable alternatively to cross the plug-barrel interface to thereby prevent the plug from rotating relatively to the barrel, the piston 17 engaging the other end of the pin 16, a spring 18 for urging the piston into the plug, movement of the ball 15 is relatively to the keyway moves the pin 16 and piston 17 relatively to the plug-barrel interface such that when the interface between the pin and piston and plug-barrel interface align rotation of the plug within the barrel is possible. The keyway has inwardly projecting ribs 4 extending along its length the ribs being recessed to provide a terminal abutment for the balls 15 each movable in a bore 11. The key 5 has recesses 19 in the edge of a groove 6 or one side of the key and a similar recess 19 on the other side of the key for three balls 15 when the key is inserted in the keyway, to allow rotation of the plug. The key has teeth 7a along one edge for operating the conventional piston and pin assemblies movable in apertures 7 in the cylinder. Plugs 9 and stops 13 close the apertures 8a and the cylinder for the pins 16 and pistons 17 and the enlarged end of each barrel.
