Food for animals.-A food for poultry or dogs is prepared from garbage from kitchens, bakeries, &c. by pulping the material, simultaneously drying and tumbling the pulp, and cooking the nodules so formed. The garbage is sorted to remove unsuitable material and bones, which may be separately ground and added subsequently, moisture is removed by a filter-press 2, the container 9 of which may be portable, and the residue, mixed with shorts, middlings, oat bulls, and dust &c. from mills, is fed to the pulping-machine 3. The extruded pulpy strings fall into a rotary drier 4 in which nodules are formed which are cooked on a belt 12 passing through a steam oven 5. The nodules of suitable size are used as a scratch feed for poultry, and the larger and smaller particles are reduced in a mill 7 and used for preparing dry mash or dog biscuits.
