Abstract

1408100 I C engine combustion chambers NISSAN MOTOR Co Ltd 15 June 1973 [12 April 1973 #2] 28644/73 Heading F1B A reciprocating piston spark ignition I.C. engine comprises a cylinder block 30 with a bore 32 in which a piston 34 reciprocates and a cylinder head 36 defining with block 30 a generally cylindrical combustion chamber 42 and having a cavity 44 connected to the combustion chamber 42 via an opening 46 whose centre is off the axis of the chamber 42, a spark-plug 48 projecting into cavity 44. The area of the opening is less than half the cross-sectional area of the combustion chamber and the volume of the cavity is more than half that of the combustion chamber. The cavity may have a portion 44a not directly above the cylinder bore 32 and the opening 46 may slope relative to piston 34 Figs. 10, 11, 12 (not shown). The cylinder may have a concave surface (60) (Fig. 12) merging smoothly into the offset portion of opening 46 and the piston 34 may have an inclined portion (56) of its end-face (Fig. 11) with a recess (58) formed therein. The edge of the opening 46 may be rounded along part or all of its circumference, Figs 13-17, 19 (not shown) and Fig. 20. The opening 44 may be circular or oval. The inlet duct 38 may open directly into the chamber 42 (Fig. 8) or into the cavity 44.
