Abstract

1407970 Maximum speed-control systems DAVIES AND METCALFE Ltd 14 Dec 1972 [16 Dec 1971] 58414/71 Heading G1N The speed of a moving vehicle is measured electrically and compared with a predetermined reference speed to operate an alarm and a braking system when the latter is exceeded. As shown Fig. 1, a switch 8 mounted on a wheel axle produces one pulse per revolution. The pulse rate is converted at 12 to a proportional voltage and compared at 16 with a reference speed voltage on line 18. When the actual speed is greater than the reference speed an alarm device 20 is energized and a relay 24, after a delay set at 22, operates the valve 26 of a braking system. The reference signal can be modified on the vehicle at 30, to allow for wheel diameter variations, or by external means, to cope with hazard conditions. Thus a first magnet set into a railway track is sensed by a detector on the train to reduce the reference speed voltage, and a second magnet similarly restores the reference speed voltage to normal. The reference signal level may be selectively shown by lamp indicators.
