1407417 Copolymerization of mono-olefins and conjugated diolefins SNAMPROGETTI SpA 24 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 54526/72 Heading C3P One or more mono-olefins and one or more conjugated diolefins are copolymerized in the presence of a compound from each of the mutually exclusive classes of compounds (a) Lewis acids of formulae AlCl 3 , AlBr 3 , AlI 3 , AlEtCl 2 , AlEtBr 2 , Al 2 Et 3 Cl 3 , TiCl 4 , SnCl 4 , SiCl 4 , VCl 4 , BF 3 , SbCl 5 , SbF 5 , VOCl 3 , ZrCl 4 and GaCl 3 and (b) compounds inactive themselves in olefin polymerization but which are capable of reacting with the Lewis acid to yield a catalyst for the production of a copolymer of a mono-olefin and conjugated diolefin selected from Ti(Acac) 4 , SnCl 2 (acetate) 2 , SnR 4 , SnRX 3 , SnR 2 X 2 , SiR 4 , Ti(OR)3X, TiX 2 (OR 2 ), Ti(OR)X 3 , Ti(OR) 4 , PbR 4 , VO(OR)X 2 , VO(OR) 3 , Ti(AR) 4 and Ti- (AR) 2 R 2 where R is a C 1 -C 10 hydrocarbon radical, X is halogen and AR is an aromatic or pseudoaromatic compound which with the T 1 atom forms a titanium arene compound. The mono-olefin may be isobutene, methyl butene or 4-methylpentene and the diolefin may be isoprene, butadiene or 2,3-dimethylbutadiene. In the examples isobutene and isoprene are copolymerized in methylchloride or methylene chloride in the presence of a system which is prereacted or which is formed in situ in which (a) is one of AlEtCl 2 , AlCl 3 , T 1 Cl 4 , AlBr 3 , AlEtBr 2 or Al 2 Et 3 Cl 3 and (b) is T 1 (OnC 4 H 9 )Cl 3 , VO- (OnC 4 H 9 )Cl 2 , SnEt 4 , SnEt 2 Cl 2 , T 1 Cl 2 (OnC 4 H 9 ) 2 , SnCl 2 (acetate) 2 , SnEtCl 3 or PbEt 4 or in comparative examples in the presence of AlEtCl 2 , T 1 Cl 4 or AlCl 3 alone. The resultant copolymer is vulcanized. The Specification refers to 1,407,415, 1,407,418, 1,407,419 and 1,407,420.
