Abstract

1407357 Sound measurement to detect insects METRIMPEX MAGYAR MUSZERIPARI KULKERESKEDELMI VALLALAT 13 March 1973 12136/73 Heading H4D The presence of insect pests in agricultural produce or timber is detected by sensing and amplifying noise caused by their activity. A sensing transducer may take the form of a rod for insertion in tested material (e.g. fruit), a disc microphone (for scanning timber), or a disc, sack or tapered vessel (for receiving, e.g. seeds to be tested). The transducer output within a selectable frequency band is amplified. The amplifier output is applied to a loudspeaker, a milliameter, an oscilloscope, an oscillograph, a tape recorder or a counter. The apparatus includes a heating device, e.g. of the radiant type, to maintain the test material temperature in the range 35-40‹ C. (to promote insect activity) and may include heat and/or sound insulation.
