1407279 Indicating measurement VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd 29 Nov 1973 [7 Dec 1972] 56494/72 Heading G1J In an instrument for indicating at least two quantities, a first substantially transparent polarizing filter 26 overlies indicia on a disc 20 for one of the quantities, a second substantially transparent polarizing filter 40 overlies the first filter 26, indicia for a second of the quantities are arranged on a transparent dial 28 between the two filters, and lights 46, 44 are provided to direct light on respective sets of indicia, the filters 26, 40 being rotatable one relative to the other in parallel planes between a first position in which light reflected from the first indicia on the disc 20 passes through both filters, and a second position in which such light passes only through the first filter and is blocked by the second filter 40. As applied to a tachograph and speedometer, a tachograph record disc is supported on the disc 20, and speed indicia are marked with white or light-coloured material on the transparent dial 28. The first filter 26 is fixed in the instrument casing, while the second filter 40 and a cover glass 12 are mounted in a ring 14 which is rotatable on the front of the casing. A speedometer point 34 is carried on a shaft 30 rotatably supported in the dial 28 and carrying a funnel-shaped guide collar 36 to assist engagement with a rear section 22 of the speedometer shaft projecting forwards from the instrument mechanism in the rear of the casing. For normal use, while the vehicle in which the instrument is mounted is being driven, the filters 26, 40 are arranged so that their axes of polarization are at right angles to each other, the dial 28 then appearing a deep blue-black with light-coloured indicia. To view the tachograph record disc, the filter 40 is rotated until its polarization axis is parallel to that of the filter 26, and the lamp 46 is switched on. The first filter 26 can be combined with the dial 28, and the second filter 40 can be combined with the cover glass 12. In a further modification, the instrument casing is stepped in diameter, and the speed indicia are arranged on the shoulder formed by the step.
