Abstract

1407116 Producing amphoteric ion-exchange copolymers COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANISATION and ICI AUSTRALIA Ltd 17 Jan 1973 2393/73 Heading C3P Amphoteric, thermally - regenerable, ionexchange resins are obtained by simultaneously polymerizing acidic and basic monomers and also, if necessary to form a cross-linked structure, cross-linking monomers, in a homogeneous aqueous solvent system under conditions which inhibit self-neutralization between the acidic and basic moieties in the forming resin, e.i. by neutralizing the monomers before polymerization and/or by providing suitable counter-ions in the polymerizing mixture which associate more strongly with the anionic and cationic moieties of the monomers than such moieties associate with one another. The acidic monomers are unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydrides thereof, while the basic monomers are allylamines, N-alkyl-ethyleneimines, dimethylaminoethyl acrylate or methacrylate and t-butyl aminoethylacrylate or methacrylate. The product resin may be subjected to simple treatments to remove the counter-ions and to effect pH equilibration. The ion-ecxhangers may be used in waterpurification, e.g. to remove divalent ions, such as calcium cations. Acidic monomers mentioned are acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic anhydride, vinyl-acetic acid and allylacetic acid. A wide variety of counter-ions are mentioned including the usual metal cations and inorganic anions and also certain organic cations, e.g. and anions, e.g. CH 3 COO-. In the examples, sodium acrylate / triallylamine hydrochloride or sulphate, benzyltrimethylammonium methacrylate/triallyl ammonium hydrochloride, sodium methacrylate/dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate / ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, and acrylic acid/triallylamine were copolymerized using persulphate initiator or irradiation, in the presence of small amounts of water and, in some cases, dimethyl formamide, and in the presence of the following added counterions, which addition is omitted in some examples where both initial monomers are already neutralized, SO4, Na + Cl, Ca + Cl, K+SO 4 , Cl+SO 4 , Mg+Cl, Sr+Cl, Ba+Cl, Zn+Cl, Mn + Cl, K+C 2 H 5 COO and Na+C 4 H 9 .COO.
