Abstract

1406938 Velocity - modulated tubes; magnetization VARIAN ASSOCIATES 3 Aug 1973 [7 Aug 1972] 37004/73 Headings H1D and H1P The periodic permanent magnet focusing system of a microwave beam tube, e.g. a travelling-wave tube or klystron, is formed by a homogeneous permanently magnetizable plate 24 magnetized in a periodic pattern of alternating polarity along the beam path. The plate 24 may be of ferromagnetic material, or permanently magnetized material in a binder, e.g. barium ferrite embedded in silicone rubber, which may be flexible to permit winding into a cylindrical shape for use with pencil or hollow cylindrical electron beams. The plate is magnetized in the desired pattern by use of a soft iron comb structure having energizing coils wound around the base of the comb teeth, with the direction of current arranged in opposite senses in the coils of adjacent teeth. As shown, a travelling wave tube having an envelope formed by a pair of alumina or beryllia ceramic plates 12, 13 sealed together at their edges, has pair of magnetic systems 23, 24 disposed on the outer surfaces of the plates, and includes a cathode 17-e.g. a directly heated tungsten ribbon-and, printed on the inner surface of each plate, a slow-wave structure 18, focusing electrodes 21 and 22, and collector 19, connection to the components being effected via conducting pins passing through the ceramic plates. In further embodiments, a plurality of tubes (Fig. 8, not shown) having a common cathode (17) and a common envelope are formed by printing a plurality of slow-wave structures on the ceramic plates for interaction with a common sheet electron beam; and (Fig. 9, not shown) a coupled backward-wave oscillator 18<SP>1</SP> and forward wave amplifier 18 are printed on the same pair of ceramic plates for interaction with a common sheet electron beam. Reference is made to an extended interaction klystron structure.
