Abstract

1406702 Making ignition distributer casings LUCAS ELECTRICAL CO Ltd 29 Dec 1972 [15 Jan 1972] 2043/72 Heading B3A A method of making an ignition distributer casing comprises providing a casing blank having a cup shaped body portion 11 and an integral hollow shank portion 12, and supporting the blank for a machining operation by engaging clamping devices with each of a pair of generally diametrically opposed lugs 13, 14 on the body portion 11. The blank is formed by casting prior to machining. The lug 13 is provided in one end face with a groove 15 of V-shaped cross-section and the corresponding end face of the lug 14 is provided with a conical recess 16. The casing blank is also provided with an integral disclike portion 17 having a flat surface 18 lying in a plane parallel to a plane containing the shaped end faces of the lugs 13, 14. The casing blank is mounted for machining by engaging clamping devices, each comprising a first jaw or conical or part-spherical form, which engage in the recess 16 or the groove 15 respectively, and a second, flat jaw which engages the opposite end of the respective lug. A further clamping device engages the portion 17 with diametrically opposed first and second components, the first engaging the flat surface 18. The second component is in two movable parts, which define a V-shaped recess. One jaw of each of the clamping devices and one component of the further clamping device are carried by one limb of a clamp and the other jaws and device are carried on a second limb, the limbs being disposed on opposite sides of the blank. The three point mounting so provided allows all the machining operations on the blank to be performed in a single sequence, e.g. drilling of side and end holes, rough turning and boring followed by fine turning and boring on the body and shank portions 11, 12. The lugs 13, 14 are additionally shaped to receive clips for retaining the distributer cap.
