Abstract
1406395 Bipolar electrode for electrolytic cell DIAMOND SHAMROCK CORP 8 Nov 1973 [9 Nov 1972] 51912/73 Heading C7B A bipolar electrode for an electrolytic cell comprises at least one rigid conductor 12 extending on both sides of a non-conducting partition 11 which divides the cell in use, and an anode 13 and cathode 14 connected to opposite extremities of the conductor in opposed spaced parallel relation to the partition, at least one electrode being so connected via conductive movable means 15 which are arranged for adjustable movement of the electrode towards an opposed electrode of opposite charge in use in the cell. The means 15 may be resilient, as shown, with insulating spacers 18 eg, of an inert halocarbon polymer, to prevent short circuiting. The partition may be PVC, PVdC or polyethylene. The conductors 12 may be Ti, Ti on Cu, or Ta. Members 15 may be Ti, Ti on brass, steel or Ni. The anode may be solid or foraminous and may be segmented. The substrate thereof may be Ti, Ta, Nb or Zr coated with Pt or an alloy thereof or a solid solution of an oxide of Pt, Ru, Pd, Ir, Rh and/or Os and an oxide of Ti, Ta, Zr and/or Nb, to which may optionally be added SnO 2 , CoTiO 3 , PV fluoride orPVd fluoride. The cathode may also be solid or foraminous, optionally segmented and may be of (stainless) steel, Ni, Ti, Pb or Pt with or without a solid oxide solution coating as above. A diaphragm or membrane may cover the cathode. The cell body may be PV fluoride or PVd fluoride for brine electrolysis or the manufacture of alkali and alkaline earth metal hypochlorites, chlorates and perchlorates.
