Abstract

1406277 Light guides PLESSEY CO Ltd 19 Sept 1973 [11 Dec 1972] 57126/72 Heading G2J An optical cable termination comprises a stub end of a fibre optic cable 1 in which cladding 3 has been removed from the fibres 2 and adjacent fibres are in mutual contact, a sleeve 4 embracing the stub end and extending axially thereof beyond the end of the stub to form an enclosure, and a filling 5, 6 extending in the enclosure from the stub end at least for a distance sufficient for light transmitted by the fibres to be distributed uniformly over the cross-sectional area of the filling. The refractive indices of the filling and of the fibres 2 should be matched, and the refractive index of the sleeve 4 should be equal to or less than that of the cladding 3. The filling may be homogeneous or composites comprising e.g. resin 5, which contacts the fibres, and a glass plug 6. Two cables terminated in this way may be coupled in alignment through the intermediary of a deformable wafer 7 the refractive index of which matches that of the plugs 6. Alternatively, the ends of the plugs 6 may be given anti-reflection coatings.
