1405930 Coated expandable particles SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPJJ BV 10 Dec 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 56732/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Coated expandable particles of a polymer of a vinyl or vinylidene aromatic compound having a coating comprising (a) a finely divided inorganic solid, (b) an inert organic nitrogencontaining compound as an anti-agglomerative (as defined), (c) a poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone and (d) a glyceryl C 16-20 carboxylate are made by contacting expandable particles of the polymer. containing a vaporisable expanding agent of b.p. or boiling range below 100‹C under normal pressure, with the foregoing coating. The coating may be applied in two stages thereby producing particles having a two-layer coating, the inner layer comprising ingredients (a), (b) and (c) above and the outer layer comprising (d). In the examples polystyrene beads containing a mixture of n- and iso-pentane were tumbled wth a suspension of magnesium carbonate powder, lauric acid diethanolamide, poly-N-vinyl pyrrolidone and ethanol, dried and then coated with a mixture of mono-, di- and tri-stearates of glycerol and sodium and zinc stearates: the coated beads were dyed black (in example IV).
