1404758 Truing spoked wheels RALEIGH INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 Aug 1972 [25 Aug 1971] 39953/71 Heading B7C A method of truing a wheel subsequent to fitting spokes 16 to the wheel hub and loosely screwing spoke nipples 26 mounted in the wheel rim 15 to the spokes comprises the steps of clamping the hub and rim with the hub offset relative to the rim such that some of the nipples. 26 project from the rim 15, and tightening the projecting nipples by rotating the clamped wheel relative to resilient band means, e.g. 19, 22, which contact the spoke nipples and rotate them on their spokes. The hub and rim may be clamped with the hub initially centralized relative to the rim, the thus clamped wheel then being rotated relative to the band means to partially tighten all the spoke nipples 26. The hub may be offset axially relative to the rim, or may be offset angularly by rotating the hub relative to the rim, and in these instances offsetting may be effected first in one sense and then in the opposite sense, tightening of projecting nipples being effected after each offsetting action and the process being repeated, if necessary, until the wheel is true. Alternatively the hub may be eccentrically offset relative to the rim. In the apparatus for carrying out the method shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the rim is clamped by horizontally or vertically mounted annular platens 10, 13, respectively having a rim retaining flange 11 and a rim receiving groove 14 and being movable towards and away from one another. At the centre of each platen 10, 13 is a hub clamping and hub spindle receiving device 12, appropriate means to move the latter being provided according to whether axial, angular or eccentric offsetting of the hub is desired. Means for centering the hub relative to the rim may also be provided. The resilient band means are mounted on a carrier 17 movable towards and away from the platens 10, 13 and comprise a movable endless band 19 and an endless band 22 fixed to non-rotatable members 23 on the carrier. The band 19 is mounted on pulleys 18 connected to knurled wheels 20 whereby when the wheels 20 are brought into contact with a friction surface 21 on the platen 10 and the platen 10 is rotated the band 19 is driven.
