Abstract

1404311 Digital measurement of area UNIVERSITY OF SURREY 27 Nov 1972 [25 Aug 1971 (2)] 5382/71 and 9155/71 Heading G1A For measuring the area of each of a succession of areas, for example spots in thin layer chromatography or peaks on a chromatograph chart record, an optical scanner scans back and forth in spaced scan lines over each of the areas, one area after another, clockpulses generated by scanning by the scanning mechanism are counted only while the scanner is actually scanning over one of the areas, the completed scanning of one area being detected as when no further pulses are counted in one or more scan lines which commands the visual display and/or printing of the accumulated count and reset of the counter for the next area. The areas may be light on a dark background or vice versa or fluorence when illuminated with for example ultraviolet light. The optical scanner comprises a photo-detector, which may be a photo-diode or photo-transistor, which makes a linear or angular scan across the width of a substrate containing the spots or the chart record in conjunction with general lumination or an accompanying light spot. Alternatively the scanning mechanism may be stationary and the substrate or chart oscillated in the scan line direction. In either case the substrate or chart is moved in an orthogonal direction so as to scan one area after another. By means of a series of contacts operated by movement of the substrate an indication is given of which area is being scanned at any moment and if several rows of areas are to be scanned an indication of which row is being scanned at a time is also given.
