Abstract

1404289 Electro-phoretic coating with polymers; zinc and copper plating A J JONES (E I Du Pont De Nemours & Co) 23 Oct 1973 49206/73 Headings C7B and C7F An article having at least the surface made of Al, Sn or an alloy thereof is coated with Cu or Zn before electro-phoretically coating with a filmforming polymer. The Cu or Zn layer may be continuous and sufficiently thick (e.g at least 0À001 mil) to prevent formation of gas bubbles during electro-phoretic coating. The Cu or Zn may be applied from a melt, by chemical displacement or by electro-plating; two coats of Zn may be applied. Specified baths include: chemical plating; aq ZnBF 4 /NiBF 4 /NH 4 Cl or ZnSO 4 /HF; electro-plating; aq ZnCl 2 /NaCN/NaOH (or Na 2 CO 3 ), ZnCl 2 /NaOH/KCN/NH 4 OH, NH4 pyrophosphate/oxalic acid/Cu oxide/triethylamine and NaOH/ZnO/polyethyleneimine, polymer baths; acrylonitrile-butylacrylate-methacrylic acid terpolymer/H 2 O/butyrolactone/PF resin. In examples Al wire, after degreasing and annealing is coated and the polymer baked on.
