Abstract

Odourless, tasteless, and fluid oils are obtained from fish oils by cautious hydrogenation so that only the highlyunsaturated acids are affected, then by slight polymerization by heating for several hours and allowing to cool in an atmosphere of hydrogen, and finally by treatment with steam to effect complete deodorization. In an example, 100 kilos. whale oil purified by caustic soda or sulphuric acid in the usual way is hydrogenated at 150-200 DEG C. in an autoclave with the aid of a nickel catalyst whereby the iodine number is reduced from 125 to 100, filtered, and slightly polymerized to remove the last traces of highly unsaturated acids by heating to 260 DEG -280 DEG C. in a closed vessel for 3-4 hours while a current of hydrogen is passed through. The oil is then allowed to cool in an atmosphere of hydrogen to 80 DEG -100 DEG C., and finally treated in vacuo with a current of superheated steam, the temperature of which is about 250 DEG -300 DEG C.
