Abstract
1403625 Labelling machines KONTTORIKONETEOLLISUUS OY 14 Sept 1972 [24 Sept 1971] 42634/72 Heading B8F [Also in Division B2] In an addressing machine, a web 1 having two or more rows of printed addresses is fed in steps corresponding to the length of the addresses by intermittently driven chains 4 having pins engaging perforations 56 in the edges 54 of the web. The perforated edges 54 are then severed by knives 5, and elements 6 perforate the web between the rows of addresses. When a transverse strip 60 of addresses arrives on a table 10 it is severed from the web by a knife 9. The label strip 60 is then fed transversely of the web direction by a driven roller 11 co-operating with a counter roller 13 until the leading edge of the leading label enters the nip between an applicator shoe 14 and a roller 15, whereupon the counter-roller 13 is raised by a cam-and-lever arrangement 32, 47-53 and a brake 16 momentarily applied to the next label. The leading label is thus torn from the strip and is carried by the shoe 14 past a gumming roll 17 and applied to an envelope on a feed track 59. The counterroller 13 is then lowered and the label strip is fed another step to apply the next label. Contacts 18 associated with the brake 16 close when the last label has been fed and the feed chain 4 is then driven for a further increment. The feed chain is driven through a ratchet drive arrangement having two sets of pawls selectively operative to give two feed distances for the web to accommodate addresses of two lengths. Should an envelope be missing, this is detected by a photo-cell and energizes a solenoid 20 which maintains the counter-roller 13 raised to withhold a label.
