Abstract
1403558 Cleaning MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 27 Sept 1972 44647/72 Heading B3D [Also in Division C5] A liquid cleaning composition comprising (a) magnetic particles coated with a surface active agent and (b) a cleaning agent is used in conjunction with an apparatus wherein the particles are moved against a workpiece by a magnetic field. The magnetic particles may be of barium ferrite coated with a non-ionic surface active agent, e.g. a fatty alcohol-ethylene oxide adduct. The cleaning agent may be an abrasive e.g. silicon carbide, another surface active agent, e.g. octyl phenyl-ethylene oxide adduct or an alkane sulphonate, or sodium hydroxide. The liquid carrier may be kerosene or water. The composition may also include triethionolamine pine, oil, engine oil, sodium carbonate, sodium phosphate, sodium silicate, sodium sulphate and ethylene glycol monobutyl ether. The workpiece, e.g. an aluminium or mild steel test piece or a lead ceramic-gold integrated circuit holder, may be placed in the composition in a non-magnetic vessel and an alternating frequency electromagnetic field applied.
