1403311 Stamping; punching; shearing MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 28 Aug 1973 [29 Aug 1972 4 Aug 1973 16 Aug 1973 (7)] 40481/73 Headings B3A B3Q and B3W Strip material is fed to a continuous rotary press comprising a rotary turret carrying a plurality of die-sets which successively perform perforating, blanking, drawing, trimming &c. operations on the moding strip. As applied to forming cups (5), Fig. 1 (not shown), from strip (1), the strip is fed to a line of four of the presses, the first press punching holes (4), the second forming shallow cups 5a in the strip, the third drawing out the cups 5b and the last shearing them from the carrier strip. Alternatively, the punching press may be omitted and the drawing dies may also sever the completed cups, or a press line, Fig. 38 (not shown), may include three drawing presses, two subsequent ironing presses and a trimming press. Each press comprises a turret 12, Fig. 6, mounting a number of inwardly-facing carriages 34 and the same number of outwardly-facing carriages 42. One or a pair of rods 24 on each carriage 34 are connected to an adjustable follower 27 on a stationary cam track 19a, a similar follower 50 connected to each carriage 42 engaging a stationary cam track 20a. The followers may be adjustable eccentrics or non-adjustable rollers. Thus rotation of the turret causes the followers to run around the tracks 19a, 20a and move each pair of carriages 34, 42 in succession as indicated in Fig. 30, one or a pair of cupping punches 54 being on each inner carriage 42 and the same number of dies 36 on each outer carriage 34. A stripper plate 59 is located on the turret between each pair of carriages 34, 42 and may have projections 62, 63, Fig. 9, for locating the strip. A bush (60) in the plate 59 may be spring- pressed to project above the plate, Fig. 26 (not shown). Each die 36 has a spring-pressed ejector 40, and guide posts 43 on the inner carriages 42, 43 engage passages in the outer carriages 34. Strip feed; turret drive.-Drive from a motor (M), Fig. 4 (not shown), is through a clutch and brake 144, Fig. 5, and a belt 83 to a shaft 84 extending to each press in a line. A reduction gear 68 driven by the shaft is coupled to the turret shaft 13 through a clutch 65 operated by a lever (76), Fig. 15 (not shown). The strip is tensioned over the rotating turret by braking rollers 88, 89, 90, 91, Fig. 16, upstream of the turret and driven rollers 120, 125, Fig. 22, downstream, one of which 125 is recessed to accommodate the cups (5d). The roller 120, through a spring-pressed friction disc 121, is driven by a spindle 116 which is connected by a belt 138 and bevel gears 139, Fig. 5, to a shaft 140 driven by a belt (Fig. 41) from shaft 84. A belt (130), Fig. 21 (not shown), preferably interconnects the rollers 120, 125 which are kept together by a spring 129. A spring-pressed friction-disc 103, Fig. 18, keyed to a stationary axle 98 applies the braking effect to the roller 91. Guides 110a, 110b, Fig. 19, between the groups of tensioning and braking rollers direct the strip in a helical path around the rotating turret over its stripper plates 59. Instead of the backing and tensioning rollers, reels may be used about which the strip is coiled. Stroke or cam track adjustment of cam 20 is by a screw 43, Fig. 11, which is turned in a slot 10d about the axis of the turret-shaft 13 to rotate the cam and screwed endwise to effect corresponding displacement of the cam. The screw engages one of two guides 145 fixed to the cam which are located between ways 147 on a member (148), Fig. 13 (not shown), permitting adjustment. Alternatively, the outer cam 19 is adjustable by means of an eccentric (164), Fig. 27 (not shown). Punching out from the carrier strip of the elongated cups (5b, Fig. 1) is by punches with cutting shoulders 54a, Fig. 24, which sever the cups in dies 36 through which they pass into tubes 154 by centrifugal force and then to a shoot 155. Spring-pressed bridges 157 clamp the strip against the stripper plate 59, the rotative movements of the punch, die and plate 59 being illustrated in Fig. 36 (not shown).
