Abstract

1403278 Centrifugal fans TEMPMASTER CORP 21 March 1973 [6 April 1972] 13622/73 Heading F1C [Also in Division F4] A fan unit comprises a centrifugal impeller mounted, without any surrounding scroll, within an acoustically insulated structure provided with an inlet and an outlet, and a driving motor mounted outside the structure. An air conditioning unit, Fig. 1, comprises a housing 10 of sound attenuating material such as glass fibre matting enclosed in steel siding. Air conditioning or heating coils 13 and/or filters are provided in a compartment 14 having an inlet 11. A centrifugal fan 22 and its driving motor 17 are mounted on a frame 16 which is supported by springs 19. The fan comprises an impeller 28 which draws in air from the compartment 14 via a conical inlet 27 and discharges it into a compartment 18 having one or more outlets to ducting 29. The wall 15 separating the compartments 14, 18 has a central substantially square opening through which the conical fan inlet 27 projects, the space between the square opening and the conical inlet 27 being closed by a square metal plate 32, Figs. 1 and 7, having a circular opening fitting over the inlet 27. The plate 32 is provided with a square frame 31 of angle cross-section connected by a strip 33 of rubber or the like to a similar frame 30 provided at the opening in the wall 15. A sound attenuator baffle 21 is located at a distance from the inlet 27 equal to a quarter of the wavelength of the predominant fan noise frequency. In a modification, the fan is enclosed by an acoustically insulated box. Two fans located back-to-back within the box may be driven by a common motor or separate motors.
